Process Expanded Disk Capacity in Windows

After the expansion, you need to allocate the new capacity to existing partitions, or create a new volume using the expanded capacity. This chapter takes Windows2016 as an example to illustrate how to process the capacity after expansion.

Before you begin

  • You have mounted the EBS disk and created a volume.
  • You have expanded the capacity of the EBS disk.

About this task

Before expansion, we can see on the disk page that the capacity of the data disk is 20 G and unallocated capacity is 0 G.

On the console, expand the disk from 20 G to 30 G, and click “Refresh”. We can see that the capacity of the disk is 30 G and unallocated capacity is 10 G.

For the newly added capacity of 10 GB, you can allocate it to existing partitions or create a new volume based on the capacity.

Procedure

  • Allocate newly added capacity to existing partitions
    1. Connect to the ECS instance remotely.
    2. In the volume list, right-click the target volume, and then choose Extend Volume.
    3. In the dialog box that opens, enter the amount of space. After that, click OK.
    4. After the expansion, you will see that the unallocated capacity of the disk is 0 GB and the volume capacity extended from 20GB to 30GB.
  • Create a new volume based on the expanded capacity

On the disk page, right-click the target disk, and then select New Volume.

You can create a new volume following the prompts on the page. For more information, see steps 10 to 15 in Initialize an EBS Disk (Windows).
